This series consists of photographs and images compiled by C. D. (Charles Douglas) Jackson during his life and career, with the exception of a small number of photographs added to the group at some point after his death in 1964. As Jackson spent many years (1931-1964, with a few gaps), in upper administrative positions for Time Inc., a large percent of the photos in this series were taken by Time and Life Magazine photographers or others for use in Time Inc. publications (eg. Fortune). These include numerous informal and studio portraits, as well as contact print proof sheets. Another part of the series pertains to Jackson’s activities during World War II, beginning with his position as Special Assistant to the United States Ambassador to Turkey from 1942 to 1943. Following that, Jackson served in the U.S. Army Office of Strategic Services, as Deputy Chief of the Psychological Warfare Branch at Allied Force Headquarters (AFHQ) from 1943 to 1944, and then as Deputy Chief of the Psychological Warfare Department at Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) from 1944 to 1945. Material from this period includes photocopied examples of German propaganda leaflets meant for dissemination to American soldiers. Upon discharge, Jackson returned as Managing Director at Time-Life International. In 1952, however, Dwight D. Eisenhower chose Jackson as a speech writer for his successful presidential campaign. Drawing upon Jackson’s experience with psychological warfare and propaganda during WWII, he appointed Jackson as his Special Assistant for International Affairs in 1953. Jackson was on the President’s Committee on International Affairs (the Jackson Committee), the Psychological Strategy Board, and the Operations Coordinating Board (which replaced the PSB). In 1954, Jackson was made U.S. Delegate to the Ninth General Assembly of the United Nations. A number of photographs in this series feature Jackson in these capacities. C. D. Jackson tirelessly promoted the United States and American capitalism around the world, fighting the Cold War through various programs and media. He founded the Council for Democracy in 1940, and headed the National Committee for a Free Europe, which raised funds for Radio Free Europe. He was also on the American Council for the International Promotion of Democracy Under God, which supported the International University of Social Studies “Pro Deo ” in Rome, Italy. Jackson was also director of Project Hope, which sent a refitted, former Navy hospital ship to aid impoverished nations in the name of the U.S.A. Later, he was a member of the International Executive Service Corps. These activities are also represented in the content of this series. Additional types of records that appear in this series include architectural drawings, diagrams, and a sketched portrait of Jackson. Topics include diplomacy, international relations, international relief, foreign aid, economic development, oil industries, radio, publishers and publishing, Atoms for Peace, and concentration camps. Geographical locations appearing include the Quemoy Islands (Taiwan), Colombia, Mexico, Portugal, West Germany, Paris (France), Beirut (Lebanon), Rome (Italy), Algiers (Algeria), and Istanbul (Turkey). Additional photos in the series were taken in New York (N.Y.), Washington D.C., Chicago (IL), Milwaukee (WI), Aspen (CO), Bohemian Grove (CA), and Florida. Organizations which appear include the Office of War Information, the Dachau and Struthof Concentration Camps, the South American Gulf Oil Company, Pan American Airways Corporation, the American National Red Cross, the National Association of Manufacturers (U.S.), the MacJannet School for Young Americans at Saint-Cloud (France), the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the submarine USS Tang (1951-1980), and the White House (Washington, D.C.). Persons of interest identified in the series include Konrad Adenauer, Joan Crawford, Willis Dale Crittenberger, John Foster Dulles, J. William Fulbright, Sylvia Gaby, Charles de Gaulle, Herbert Hoover, Pope John XXIII, Lyndon B. Johnson, Arthur Larson, Henry Cabot Lodge, Mary Pillsbury Lord, Robert A. McClure, John S. This film documents the dedication of World War I memorials in Europe. Dedications in France include: the Meuse-Argonne Memorial, Montfaucon; St. Mihiel Memorial, Montsec; Memorial on Blanc Mont Ridge, Champagne region; Aisne-Marne Memorial, Chateau-Thierry; memorial, Cantigny; Brest Naval Memorial, Brest; memorial fountain, Tours; and memorial, Bellicourt. Other dedications include: memorial, Audenarde, Belgium; Vierstraat Monument, Ypres, Belgium; Naval Memorial, Gibraltar; a chapel in Brookwood American Cemetery, Brookwood, England; and a chapel in Flanders Field American Cemetery, Waereghem, Belgium. The film begins with a map marked with memorial sites. Then, General J. B. P. Clayton Hill is shown as he laid a wreath on a monument at Verdun, France. Speeches were given by General John J. This series consists of photographs accumulated by Alfred M. Gruenther between the beginning of the Second World War and his death in 1983. The majority of the photographs fall into two groups. Photos in the first group concern Gruenther's U.S. Army career while at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), where he served as Chief of Staff and then Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). Some of these photos were taken at SHAPE locations in France and Belgium. Other locations featured include Fontainebleau, France; Lisbon, Portugal; Rome, Italy; Luxembourg; Ottawa, Ontario; and places in West Germany, England, Malta, Greece, and Turkey. Many SHAPE personnel, European leaders, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) diplomats appear in these photographs. Also included are photos of SHAPE alumni banquets and meetings of the SHAPE Officers' Association. Photos in the second group concern Gruenther's term as president of the American National Red Cross from 1957-1964. In this capacity Gruenther was photographed visiting foreign countries such as the Philippines, where he met members of the Philippine National Red Cross, and speaking at institutions and events across the United States. Gruenther is shown at Columbia University; at Ft. Myer, Virginia; Assumption College, Worcester, Massachusetts; at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska; and at Boy Scouts of America events. During this time, he also attended several annual Forrestal Award Dinners presented by the National Security Industrial Association. A set of 11 photos included in the series were used by Gruenther during an appearance on the Today Show in 1962 to illustrate disaster relief undertaken by the Red Cross. Another set of photos features Barbara Eisenhower visiting the Hellenic Red Cross Headquarters in Athens, Greece, in 1959. Also included in the series are 27 portraits of American Red Cross staff members. Other photographs in the series show Gruenther speaking in later years to a meeting of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America in New York City, at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, and at the National War College in Washington, D.C. He also appears attending a lecture at the National Defense University at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. A few photos show Gruenther at Bohemian Grove encampments. The series also contains a variety of photographs of Dwight D. Eisenhower taken at various important times and places, including at the White House, addressing the United Nations General Assembly, and on visits to countries around the world. The series includes photographs removed from three photograph albums. The first was given to Gruenther by Loyola University of Los Angeles after he spoke at commencement exercises in 1965. The second was given to him by Seattle University after he spoke at commencement exercises in 1956. The third was compiled and given to Gruenther by WOJG Margaret J. Finnegan upon her departure from service in his office at SHAPE, ca. 1954. Most photographs in this last album are SHAPE photographs.
