Unpublished manuscript (1871) of Dodge's study of Congressional legislation during the period 1860-1870. National legislation during this time concerned such topics as laws creating the army, embargo, confiscation, military and naval courts, blockade, use of railways and telegraph, suspension of habeas corpus, Freedmen's Bureau, Reconstruction, civil rights, revenue, Union Pacific Railroad, Northern Pacific Rail Road Co., agricultural colleges, patents and copyrights, bankrupt act, U.S. courts, and Asiatic commerce. Bound with commendatory letters (1871-1874) from John William Draper, William C. Bryant, Henry W. Longfellow, Howard Crosby, and J.W. Gerard, Jr.; also letter of presentation from the author dated 1875.

Woolsey family papers, 1750-1969 (bulk 1811-1921)

The papers document three generations of the Woolsey family. The most prominent figures in the collection are William Walton Woolsey (1766-1839), land owner and merchant in New York City; his son, Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889), Greek scholar, political theorist and president of Yale College; and Theodore Salisbury Woolsey (1852-1929), professor of international law at Yale Law School, son of Theodore Dwight Woolsey. The papers of William Walton Woolsey contain extensive business correspondence, ledgers, legal papers, documents relating to land sales in New York and Ohio, as well as family and personal letters. Since he was engaged in the importation of sugar, cotton and hardware, some of his business correspondence is political with discussions of the Jay Treaty of 1794, the problems of piracy, American neutrality in the 1790s and the general politics of the period. Important correspondents are Chauncey Goodrich, Archibald Gracie, Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, Elihu and Nathaniel Chauncey, Oliver Wolcott, Benjamin Tallmadge, Jedidiah Morse, James Roosevelt, John A. Schuyler, Comfort Sands, John Broome, and Nicholas Bayard. The papers of Theodore Dwight Woolsey contain his writings on Greek language and literature, the Bible, international law and the texts of his sermons.

Correspondence and manuscripts of Barnard, spanning his adult life from 1831 to 1889. The majority of the correspondence covers his positions as President and Chancellor of the University of Mississippi and President of Columbia College. Addressees prominent among Barnard's outgoing letters include Edward Claudius Herrick, Eugene and Julius Hilgard, and Simon Newcomb. The letters to the Hilgards, many of which are photostatic copies, deal with the University of Mississippi. There are several letters each to Barnard from Alexander Dallas Bach, William Cullen Bryant, Howard Crosby, James D. Dana, Morgan Dix, Hugh McCulloch, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Theodore Dwight Woolsey. This collection also contains five volumes of Barnard's manuscript sermons, two volumes of miscellaneous addresses and speeches, and a manuscript volume of his autobiographical reminiscences with letters bound in, some originals, some typescript copies. There is also a photograph album of the University of Mississippi Class of 1861, including several campus views.

Consists of correspondence by and about Tolstoy, a portrait of Tolstoy, and a copy of Tolstoy's Kreĭt︠s︡erova sonata. The portrait is in blue and white pencil and crayon by L. L. Tolstoi of his father, drawn from memory on January 2, 1922, in Paris. It bears an inscription and the signature of the younger Tolstoy on the verso. The manuscript copy of Tolstoy's Kreĭt︠s︡erova sonata which is based on Ludwig van Beethoven's "Kreutzer sonata" is a hectograph process reproduction of a handwritten text in Russian. This copy bears the inscription of N. Simonov and the date 1890 on p. 1 of wrapper. It is 109 numbered pages and 29 x 19.1 cm.

The collection contains notebooks kept by six NYU students, Charles Ludlum, Ezekiel Deyo Van Dyck, James Morton Paton, William Frank Burroughs, John Henry MacCracken, and Elbert William Brown. They contain notes on lectures given between 1860 and 1897; subjects covered include algebra; botany; chemistry; geology; Greek language, literature, and archeology; English literature; rhetoric; religion; physiology; physics, including pneumatics, acoustics, heat, magnetism, and optics; philosophy; and church history. Instructors include Henry Martin Baird, George Washington Coakley, Henry Draper, John C. Draper, Albert H. Gallatin, Elias Loomis, Henry Mitchell MacCracken, Benjamin N. Martin, and John J. Stevenson. The collection also contains a journal by George Hendric Houghton, 1839-1850, with a collection of orations and poetry; a diary kept by John Torrey while travelling in Europe in 1833, with accompanying material dated 1938; and a journal dated 1886, containing sermons written by Howard Crosby.

The Roe family papers have extensive material on family life, specifically concerning such subjects as relations between brothers and sisters and parents and children, courtship, marriage, stepmothering, health and illness, old age, death, and finances. The papers also document the educational, missionary, and pastoral careers of several members of the Roe family and the Indian mission work of the Women's Board of Domestic Missions of the Reformed Church in America.

There is no evidence that these were ever published as a memorial volume. The only paper known to have been used is the reminiscence by Andrew Dickson White. It was delivered as a Founder's Day Address in 1890 and published as a pamphlet the same year. Also a manuscript of Alonzo Cornell's A HISTORY OF CORNELL UNIVERSITY 1865-1900.
