Three diaries kept by Julia Webster Appleton of Boston, Mass. The first two diaries (18 May- 17 Aug. 1839; 18 Aug.- 21 Oct. 1939), kept during a trip to England with her father, Daniel Webster, and step-mother, Caroline Le Roy, describe her travels and marriage to Samuel A. Appleton, Sept. 24, 1839. The third diary (24 Aug. 1843- 12 July 1847) was kept while Julia and Samuel lived in Boston and describes her daily life, family, and social engagements. Also includes a letter from Samuel A. to his brother William and sister-in-law Georgie Appleton, 13 April 1839, discussing his engagement; and a specimen book containing flowers from Europe, ca. 1839.

Papers of Nathan Appleton, merchant, manufacturer, banker and congressman; his sons, Thomas G. and Nathan Jr. ; and other family members. The collection includes loose papers, journals, letterbooks, scrapbooks, and 3 oversize folders of legal documents and genealogical materials. Other family members represented in the collection are Nathaniel, Samuel, Moses, Eben, William, William S., and William S. Appleton Jr. Nathan Appleton's papers concern trade with England, the textile industry and national politics. They contain information on the War of 1812, his position in favor of slavery, antebellum tariff legislation in Congress and Whig Party politics. Major correspondents include Nicholas Biddle, Abbott Lawrence, William C. Rives, Charles Sumner and Daniel Webster. The papers of artist and poet Thomas G. Appleton contain descriptions of his early days at Round Hill School, his travels in Europe, and Boston social life. The papers of Nathan Appleton Jr. concern his service in the 5th Battery of the Mass. Light Artillery during the Civil War, his business dealings and his promotion of American imperialism and the plans of Ferdinand de Lesseps for a Panama Canal. Also included is the diary of Isaac F. Coffin written in Chile in 1820-25 describing the political upheaval and revolution.
