The paper gives information on early settlers in Oneota (Duluth), such as Edmund F. Ely, Henry W. Wheeler, and the family of Lewis Merritt. Information is given on the first school in the area which was organized by Ely, Wheeler, and Merritt in 1856. Other topics are pioneer conditions in Oneota; the six school districts formed in the Duluth area in 1858; extracts from an early school district record book (1858); names of early school teachers employed by the school; lists of school age children; and recollections of school and of teachers by some of the early students.
