Correspondence chiefly consists of Oliver Hering's letters to his sister Mary Helen Hering Middleton. Letters of Oliver Hering from Spanish Town (Jamaica), Paul Island, Heybridge Hall (England), and elsewhere to Mary Helen Hering (later Mary Middleton) at Bath (England), Charleston (S.C.), and elsewhere concern personal, family, and social affairs, and other matters. A close and confidential relationship between brother and sister is revealed in these letters, which discuss, among other things, the writings of Gibbon, Mary Wollstonecraft, Rousseau, and others, Oliver Hering's promotion to the rank of corporal in a company of grenadiers (1791), his trip to St. Thomas (Virgin Islands), Hering's desire to marry, his rejection by a "Miss D--," his work as a lawyer, his marriage to Mary Ross, the Maroon War, Mary Hering's suitors and her engagement and marriage to Henry Middleton, Mary Middleton's sojourn in France, the declaration of war by the French (1797), Napoleon's armies in Egypt and Spain, the death of Julines Hering (1732-1797), the inheritance of Oliver Hering and his brother Julines Hering (b. 1767), Oliver Hering's financial troubles (1830s), and the education of children. Correspondence includes poems, one concerning slaves at work on a sugar plantation and the plantation owner's hopes for prosperity.
