Epithet: Prebendary of St Paul's 1780; antiquary
Cambridge University's history can be dated back to the early thirteenth century, when scholars congregated in the city for the purpose of study. The first college, Peterhouse, was established in 1284.
Michael Lort (1725-1790), antiquary, entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1743, and became a Senior Fellow in 1768. He was Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge, 1759-1771, and was made a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1755, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1766. He became a Prebendary of St Paul's in 1780. Lort died on 5 November 1790.

Some letters undated. Correspondents: David Garrick, [William] Herbert, [Michael] Lort, Edmond Malone, Thomas Percy, Isaac Reed, [Paul? Vaillant], R.B. Sheridan and possibly another. Also, Steevens' notes on Beaumont and Fletcher; and Malone's advertisement for an edition of The plays of Shakspeare, embellished by Charlton Nesbit after Mr. Thurston, December 1804. The letters discuss points of literary interest; many concern Steevens' collaboration with Malone and Reed in the editing of Shakespeare's plays. In a letter to Garrick [1771?], (2), Steevens mentions Garrick's current altering of Hamlet. In another to Malone, May 9, 1782, (24), he refers to a small, full-length picture of Shakspeare, a pretended original. In two letters to Percy, 1797, (41 and 43), he notes prices fetched by the old quartos of Shakspeare. Several letters refer to Chatterton and Goldsmith. Correspondents and item numbers: David Garrick (1-4); [William] Herbert (5-9), [Michael Lort (10-12), Edmond Malone (13-37), Thomas Percy (38-44), Isaac Reed (15-48), [Paul? Vaillant] (49), R.B. Walpole, Horace, 1717-1797. A series of autograph letters to his friend Rev. Dr. Lort concerning Thomas Chatterton and his spurious writings; also in vindication of himself, / Horace Walpole, Lord Orford, 1788-1789.
Title:
A series of autograph letters to his friend Rev. Dr. Lort concerning Thomas Chatterton and his spurious writings; also in vindication of himself, / Horace Walpole, Lord Orford, 1788-1789.
Manuscript, in Walpole's hand, of four letters written to to the Rev. Dr. Michael Lort in vindication of his conduct towards Thomas Chatterton. He summarizes, refutes, and mocks the charges brought against him by William Barrett, writer of a history of Bristol; the Rev. Andrew Kippis; and an anonymous letter writer. He also thanks Lort for his support; asserts that Chatterton did not give him any indication of genius; emphasizes Chatterton's forgeries; and expresses his irritation at having become involved in defending his own conduct. The letters are dated at Strawberry Hill in 1788 and 1789. Accompanying the letters is the original folded paper envelope in which they were returned to Walpole by Mrs. Lort, on which appears a note signed by Walpole, "My letters to Dr. Lort returned by his widow after his death. Two or Three about Chatterton are very particular & worth preserving." A typewritten transcript accompanies each letter, and the collection is prefaced with engraved portraits of Walpole and Chatterton, as well as a title page and biography about Chatterton handwritten in black and red ink.
