Papers consist mostly of ALS written between family members, including letters, 1838-1883 and undated, from brothers George, Thomas T., Salem, and Nathan Griggs to their brother, Lewis; from their mother, Mary, to George and Lewis; and from Lewis to George. Some of these letters, 1849-1852, relate news of George's decision to go to California, his passage on the ship Edward Everett, and his experiences as a gold miner and as a businessman with Barr, Griggs, and Coursen, wholesale merchants, in Sacramento. One letter from George to his mother, dated at Sacramento, 1852, is written on a letterhead picturing the facade of Barr & Griggs, successors to Cavert & Co. Also present is a holograph diary kept by Lewis, Sep. 1848-Jan. 1849, with entries discussing George's departure; and a receipt for gold forwarded by George from Sacramento to Mary, his mother, in Sutton, Massachusetts, 1850. A few letters, dated 1864, are from Lewis Griggs to his daughters, Ann and Louisa, written during his service in the United States Army in Kentucky during the Civil War. Other letters, 1845-1924, were written by Joseph Franklin Griggs, to Louisa and to his sisters "Mrs. William W. Taylor" and "Margie;" by J. B. and Thomas C. Griggs, sons of Joseph Franklin; by Lewis's wife, Mary E. Griggs, and by her father, Nathan Hancock; and by George P. Stockwell to Henry Stockwell, husband of Louisa Griggs. Also present is a letter from Alanson Wedge, a student at Brown University and possibly a relative of the Griggs family, to his sister Hannah Wedge, 1847. Other papers include a deed for land purchased by Thomas Griggs in Sutton, Massachusetts, 1775, and a deed for a pew in the First Congregational Meeting House, Sutton, purchased by John Griggs, 1830, both printed forms completed in manuscript; manuscript receipts, most pertaining to John and to Thomas and his wife, Mary, 1786-1853; two school exercises written by Lewis Griggs, 1828 and 1833, a military pass issued to him, undated, and a small number of his business papers, 1850-1864 and undated, mostly letters and receipts from Keep & Caulfield, New Orleans, written to Lewis in Cincinnati; a clipping of an obituary for Joseph Franklin Griggs, from the Commercial Gazette, Pittsburgh, 1897; a few clippings and unidentified papers; and reproductions of three cabinet photographs, of John, 1845; Mary, undated; and George Griggs, 1844.
