Plantation diary of William Taylor, owner of Lakeland and Briers plantations in Pointe Coupee Parish, La., describes the routine activities and operations of his sugar and cotton plantations. Entries relate Taylor's dealings with his plantation overseers, the purchase and maintenance of slaves, cultivation of crops, management of livestock, processing of agricultural products, and regular business transactions with firms in New Orleans, such as Burke, Watt, and Company, and Benoist and Hockry. Taylor records the visits of many relatives and friends. Gen. Zachary Taylor's family frequently exchanged visits with the Taylors. Other frequent and locally prominent visitors included S. J. Carr, Edwin B. Smith, Robert Barrow, Sr., Judge Robert C. Nichols, Judge George Matthews, W. Skipwith, Frederick Nash Ogden, John M. Bell, John Brashear, Charles Poydras, Col. Charles Magee, and Buckston Layton. W. C. Harding, an artist, visited Lakeland in 1839 and painted Mrs. Lucy Lewis Taylor's portrait. Accounts of local politics in 1840 include the Whig convention at Baton Rouge, the election of Judge Thomas Gibbs Morgan to Congress, and the election of Charles Poydras to the state legislature. Political events recorded in 1842 include the Louisiana congressional-gubernatorial election in which John B. Dawson was elected representative to Congress and Alexander Mouton was elected governor.
