The collection contains 12 folders in 2 boxes. The largest folder has 223 pages while the smallest has only 21. The inclusive dates are 1928-1929. This collection includes correspondence, meetings minutes, press releases, photographs, and other documents about the St. Francis dam disaster. As the original arrangement of the papers has been kept, most folders contain documents related either to one of the government-established committees or to some non-governmental organizations. The papers document, in detail, how various governmental committees and non-governmental organizations worked together for the disaster's relief and compensation. It also deals with the conflicts between the Los Angeles city government and the Red Cross on some relief issues, the legal aspects of Los Angeles city government's relief efforts, and the investigation of the causes of the dam's failure. Among others, Charles C. Teague, mayor of the City of Santa Paula, participated in the decision making process of the disaster's relief and investigation and he is an author in the collection. Numerous images were taken near the San Andreas Fault in various parts of the state shortly after the quake. Images depict the results of earth movement, offset to fences and roads, landslides, etc. Also includes many views of structural damage in San Francisco, Santa Rosa, San Jose, and other urban locales. Some of these views appeared in the California State Earthquake Investigation Commission report, The California Earthquake of April 18, 1906. While some views of fire damage in San Francisco are included, the emphasis of the overall collection is earthquake damage across the broader fault region.

Chiefly correspondence; together with manuscripts of writings, reprints, notes, reports, records of earthquakes and epicenters, and copies of the publication Volcano Letter (1934-1940). Includes large groups of correspondence with Carnegie Institution of Washington (relating to the establishment of a central station for seismological investigation), with Seismological Society of America (relating to mapping earthquake faults in the U.S., recording earthquakes, and establishing safe building codes), and with U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (exchanging seismological data). Includes material relating to the earthquake situation in southern California and correspondence with George Louderback relating to the 1857 earthquake. Other correspondents include various seismological observatories and manufacturers of instruments and equipment for seismological laboratories.
