The collection contains correspondence, articles, speeches, printed material, photographs, and research notes pertaining to McDaniel's professorship of horticulture at the University of Illinois; membership in the American Magnolia Society, the Holly Society of America, and the Northern Nut Growers Association; and research concerning magnolias, hollies, fruits and nuts, particularly persimmons and pecans. Major subjects are McDaniel's tenure as president of the American Magnolia Society, 1968-1982, particularly conferences, newsletters, finances, and Society projects; and his interest in the classification, breeding and cultivation of magnolias, hollies, and persimmons. Other topics of interest include a 1964 magnolia hunting trip to Mexico and Guatemala and Dr. Yu-Chen Ting's visit to Honan Province, China to collect magnolia seeds. The collection also contains the book "Persimmons for everyone" by Eugene and Mary E. Griffith which McDaniel edited.

Papers consist of correspondence with nurserymen and other rhododendron growers in the United States and around the world. There are also a few letters from his wife, while he was in Cairo, Egypt. Also present are certificates and awards; printed material; articles by other authors, including Stephen L. Krebs and Dan E. Mayers; a small notebook; photographs; programs; information regarding ARS Research Grants; early employment records for Kehr; and his Presidential Address at the Annual Meeting of the ARS in 1977. There is also a cassette tape recording of "Nick Fortescue on the Red Maximum" (March 17, 1991). Correspondents include Os Blumhardt, Brett and Dorothy Callaway, John D. Carlson, Karl E. Flinck, Maurice and Rosemary Foster, Frank B. Galyon, Mark Haimes, Harry Heinemann, Joseph Hickman, Harold Hopkins, Olav Kalleberg, Mark Krautmann, Wade Mahlke, Frederick G.
