Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Ganso, Emil. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1929-1944, n.d.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1929-1944, n.d.
A German immigrant and baker, Emil Ganso had a strong but short career as a painter and printmaker. His first exhibition was at the Weyhe Gallery in 1926, and Carl Zigrosser and Erhard Weyhe fondly looked after Ganso's career. Many of the letters from Ganso are undated, some are in German. The topics of the letters are typical of an artist writing to his dealer: progress of work, pieces shipped, arrangements for exhibitions and competitions, sales and finances. Zigrosser also helped Ganso write his application for a Guggenheim Fellowship, and helped him find posts as ateacher at Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin and at the State University of Iowa at Iowa City. There is a long and gossipy letter about Gra nt Wood and the faculty at the State University at Iowa. Ganso died suddenly on April 18th, 1941. Zigrosser and Ganso were friends as well as business associates, many of the undated letters are friendly notes and invitations to visit the Ganso's in Woodstock, N.Y. Included is a print by Jules Pascin inviting guests to a party at Ganso's studio. Pascin and Ganso shared a studio. Included in the file are exhibition announcements, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, obituaries, a typed list of works by Ganso (with prices) held by Weyhe Gallery at the time of Ganso's death, letters and press releases related to memorial exhibitions and a 1944 retrospective. In the undated material is a 1926 biographical sketch and press release announcing that Ganso will bake a special cake for the opening of his first exhibition.

Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1940-1972.
The 1940-1941 correspondence is from Lester Longman, Head of the Art Department, who used Zigrosser as a distinterested sounding-board. Longman praises Emil Ganso and Fletcher Martin, 2 artists on his staff, and asks for Zigrosser's candid opinion Grant Wood, the center of controversy at the University. Zigrosser's response is critical of Wood's work. Zigrosser spoke at the University in 1941, the year of Emil Ganso's death. Longman wrote for Zigrosser's opinion of Ernest Fiene as a new instructor. Zigrosser wrote back with some criticism and suggested artist Harry Sternberg instead.

Title:
John Steuart Curry and Curry family papers
The papers of painter, muralist, and illustrator John Steuart Curry, and Curry family papers, measure 10.1 linear feet and date from 1848 to 1999. Papers document his career and family history through certificates, correspondence, photographs, clippings, contracts, receipts, inventories, writings, notes, and other materials. The papers contain particularly rich documentation of Curry's period as artist-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin, from 1936 to 1946. Mural projects in Kansas, Washington, DC, and Wisconsin are also documented. Biographical Materials include chronologies, biographical narratives, genealogical notes, certificates and awards, and other ephemera related to Curry and his family. Family Correspondence includes the earliest records created by Curry himself, including letters home from art school and from the East Coast during his early career. Correspondence and Project files document mural projects, appearances, gallery relationships, and other activities from the early 1930s until his death in 1946 with correspondence, photographs, clippings, contracts, writings, and other miscellany. Subject files include pictorial reference and research files created by Curry for subjects depicted in his murals and paintings. Curry's writings include essays, lectures, interviews, and notes related to his technical and philosophical approach to art, as well as notes from his various travels, and essays by others about Curry. Personal Business Records contain records of artwork, business transactions, and personal finances. Print Materials include print copies of published artwork by Curry, including magazine illustrations from Curry's early career. Extensive clippings, exhibition catalogs, and a scrapbook created by Curry as a youth are also found. Photographs depict Curry throughout his life in formal portraits, candid snapshots, and publicity photographs, with a significant number of photographs depicting Curry creating and posing with his artwork. The Artwork series contains a few sketches by Curry and seven canvases used for testing art materials. Additional sketches are found in Subject Files and scrapbooks. Estate Papers contain materials dated after Curry's death in 1946 and mainly document the activities of Kathleen Curry in managing her husband's estate from 1946 until her death in 2001. Estate papers contain writings about Curry, correspondence, inventories of artwork, and alphabetical files documenting sales, exhibitions, and other projects.
