Title:
A colleccon of many learned letters, early 17th century.
Manuscript on paper, in a single secretary hand, of 10 copies of letters written to and from prominent figures in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, about subjects both personal and political. In a letter from Sir Fulke Greville to his cousin "residing in France," Greville sends him money and apologizes that it is not a more substantial amount, but he had "extraordinary chardges this year"; he also reminds his cousin to make use of his travels to better himself "either in knowledge of god or of the world." The collection also includes a letter from Henry Arundel to his father, in which he contests his father's condemnation of him, declaring that "be it that that I have offended I never was dicer, I never was whorehunter, I never was drunkard, I never fell into any notable vice and am thus punished for treadinge awrye." Other items include a letter from Sir Philip Sidney to his brother concerning his travels; another from Robert Cecil to Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester; and two between Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Keeper, and Robert Devereux Earl of Essex, Earl Marshal. A letter from Queen Elizabeth to the Earl of Essex reprimanding him for failing to carry out her offical commands is annotated, in the same hand, "for more of this speech in Morison's Itinerary Part Second pag: 39."

Waterhouse, Edward, Sir, 1535-1591,. Autograph letter signed from Sir Edward Waterhouse, London, to Francis Agard, Esq. [manuscript], 1576/7 February 6.
Title:
Autograph letter signed from Sir Edward Waterhouse, London, to Francis Agard, Esq. [manuscript], 1576/7 February 6.
Concerns possible matches for Ursula Thwaites, including Henry Finch, Robert Sidney, Anthony St. Leger, and the hare-lipped son of Serjeant (William) Lovelace. Strongly denies a supposed marriage contract between Henry Finch and Ursula Thwaites, for which Finch's stepfather, Nicholas St. Leger, is "half condemnid in Ireland." Reports that Warham St. Leger is importunate with his brother (Nicholas St. Leger) and Waterhouse for allegedly giving Warham's eldest son Anthony access to her. Of a possible match between her and Robert Sidney, expresses his opinion that "it were a great Iniury to Mr. Ro[bert] Sidney, to match so meanely when the care of his vncles [Leicester and Warwick] over him manifestith some great alliance by his match to his fathers howse, for it is thought my lord of lecester will make him equall w[i]th Mr Phillip." Asks Agard to be careful of her, declares himself and Nicholas St. Leger faultless of ill practice, and states his intention to remain neutral. Recommends that Ursula either marry Robert Sidney, or else be made a free woman to choose for herself ("she hath twice fined for her wardship").

[Letter book], [ca. 1590-1638].
Manuscript, in a single hand, of copies of letters primarily written by Castillion to family and acquaintances, followed by literary excerpts, religious poetry, proverbs, and lists of nobility. The letters primarily ask for favors from the nobility, and include several to Elizabeth I and one to King James I asking pardon for an offense Castillion had committed. A letter to the Earl of Hertford asks for his support in his bid for Burgess of Bedwin, followed by Hertford's regretful reply that he has already written a letter in support of another; another letter to Lady Momperson asks if she would let his eldest daughter attend on her. Many other letters are to the Lady Worseley, asking for her favor towards Castillion's son, whom he hopes to match into her family; the other letters praise her purity and beauty. One such letter is annotated, "This my letter was written all in gold unto the Lady Worseley 1630." The collection also contains numerous letters to family members, as well as a copy of the inscription "to be set in Speene Church for Baptist Castillion Esquier, with an epitaph, by his eldest son Sir Francis Castillion," and a letter of challenge to Sir Francis Caulton in 1607 over a dishonor to his wife. The letters are followed by a collection of miscellaneous material, including "moral sentences" excerpted from Philip Sidney's Arcadia and Erasmus; poetry based on New Testament passages; a list of the names of all knights, citizens, and burgesses of ever shire in England and Wales at Parliament in 1620; and an eyewitness account of Queen Elizabeth's visit to the army at Tilbury after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, "I myselfe beinge there a Captayne, and an eye Witnesse. F.C." The last pages in the manuscript are in a 19th century hand, and contain copies of Castillion's letters as well as a copy of a letter dated 1838 regarding a pulley or "paralytic apparatus" sent to Sir B. Brodie, Bart., and a list of scientific notes.
