Includes papers of all managers in the German office of J. Walter Thompson (J. Walter Thompson GmbH) from 1959 to the early 1990s. Topics include office management, clients (local and multinational), new business, market research, advertising organizations, and relations with other JWT offices in Europe and the U.S. The records, many of them in German, provide the most extensive view yet available of J. Walter Thompson's European operations. The films and videos contain nearly all the commercials produced by the agency in Germany. The print ads include campaigns for major multinational clients such as Kraft, DeBeers, Ford and Unilever, as well as local German clients. The collection is divided into the following sub-collections: Peter Gilow Papers, George Black Papers, Burkhard Schwarz Papers, Herbert Brungs Papers, Harry Clark Papers, Denis Lanigan Papers, Paul Siebel Papers, Wilfried Henkel Papers, Gordon Effer Papers, Christian Grupe Papers, Hakan Verner-Carlsson Papers, Dominique Simonis Papers, Francis Gearon Papers, and the Alec Morrison Papers. Addition (04-142) consists primarily of Annual Management Assessments and Objectives (dated mid-1970s) for offices overseen by JWT Frankfurt, including Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich, and Stockholm. There are also a few articles and other ephemera. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History. This addition is not processed. Addition (04-354) (1375 items, 7.2 lin. ft. dated [1970s-1990s]). comprises new business presentations and advertising review reports for clients such as Kodak, Philips, Kraft, R.J. Reynolds, DeBeers, 1992 Barcelona Olympics, RWE, REA-GIPS, Natreen, Misubishi Electric, Deutsche Bank, Kraft, Bacardi, Kelloggs, Koral/Lever and others. Of note is a 1985 presentation to De Beers entitled WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE GERMAN MARKET? Also included are company strategy books, presentation show books, and clippings.
