Letters and papers reflecting Tyson's interest in the Democratic Party, his activities in Washington to spread Unionism among Confederate soldiers imprisoned in the north, the migration of North Carolinians to Indiana during the Civil War, his business ventures and efforts to raise money for a machine to extract gold from ore, and family matters. Includes letters (1863-1865) from prisoners of war, primarily at Point Lookout, Md., to Tyson, describing forced induction into the Confederate Army and the army's abduction of deserters and ambush of Unionists in North Carolina. Also includes papers of his brother, James Tyson, of Durham Staton, N.C.
