The collection contains a volume of notes from unidentified, undated chemistry lectures. A letter from John Tilley to William Wirt, 1803 August 20, concerns property in Bladensburg, Md., leased by a Richard Ross from Miss Elizabeth Johnston, and mentions the disposition of some slaves, and the progress of his ward Elizabeth. Copes of letters to John Minor of Charlottesville from J. Bell and Alexander Bell of London, 1834, discuss business matters and estate settlement. The will of Margaret Terrell of Albemarle County, 1784, divides land, money, and slaves among her children. There is also a Christmas greeting from George Gilmer and his wife Lucy, 1792 December 18. A letter from George Gilmer to William Douglas of Louisa, 1782, remonstrates with him for taking a second wife and leaving his widowed daughter unprovided. A letter from George Gilmer to an unidentified recipient,1792, congratulates him on his grandson's marriage. Letters from George Ridgway Minor, 1995, to family members discuss the proveneance of the above items and send a Minor family genealogical line.

(1750s) or to the Albemarle Iron Works. Of special interest are copies of treaties, 1744 & 52, with the Six Nations at Lancaster and Logstown, and a sale of 6 million acres in Ohio in 1777. Among the correspondence and miscellaneous papers are a letter protesting the Stamp Act, a letter from John Marshall, discussing legal problems in a slave sale, a Revolutionary soldier's pension claims, a plea for William Wirt to Francis Walker to settle an estate for educational funds for James Gilmer, a list, ca. 1880, of polite literature for a young lady, a midshipman's appointment signed by Andrew Jackson, Pres. Accounts kept by William Norvell, Sheriff of James City County, of the quit rents and taxes levied and paid for 1768-1769. Taxes included a per capita tax on tithables, levied in pounds of tobacco, and a chariot and chair tax. Also listed are Corporation of Williamsburg fines, and fines for failure to attend militia musters. Sheriff's deputies did most of the actual collecting and received a fee for doing so. Containing papers of the allied Nicholas family and Jefferson family. The collection includes 64 letters from Thomas Jefferson and 375 to him relating to family affairs, management of Monticello and his financial relations. Letters from John Taylor of Caroline to Wilson Cary Nicholas, 1806-1808, contain important material on politics; a group of letters of George Wythe Randolph, Secretary of War of the Confederacy, contain copies of his correspondence with Jefferson Davis and other Confederate leaders. The bulk of the papers after 1820 consists of the correspondence of George Wythe Randolph, his brother Thomas Jefferson Randolph and wife Jane Nicholas Randolph, and their children, particulary Mary Buchanan Randolph and A draft copy of the will of Martha Jefferson Randolph, April 18, 1834 is included. The collection includes deeds, plats, patents, and other legal papers concerning lands in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Goochland, Henrico, and Powhatan Counties, several of which establish the chain of title to Edgehill. Deeds for land owned by the Randolph Family (Richard Randolph, Jr., Thomas Mann Randolph, Thomas Jefferson Randolph), the Eppes Family (Francis Eppes, Richard Eppes, and William Eppes), and the Nicholas Family (John Nicholas, George Nicholas, and Robert Carter Nicholas.) Of interest is a plat of the town of Beverley, Henrico County, surveyed by Peter Jefferson (1751 June 6) and a survey of Thomas Bryan Martin's land (1762 March 29) The survey is of the Manor of Greenway Court, a tract of 8840 acres in Frederick County granted to Martin by Thomas Lord Fairfax, made in connection with the lawsuit of Thomas B. Martin vs. Peter Wolf, defendant in an ejection suit. (Perhaps used after 1762 in an early case, not listed in T. J.'s Case Book.). Correspondents include John Adams, John Barnes, Charles L. The collection contains an account book of general merchandise of Hudson Martin and Co., Albemarle County, Va., which lists accounts with John Jouett, Sr., John Jouett, Jr., George Gilmer, Thomas Walker, Jr., Philip Mazzei, Hastings Marks, John Harvie and others including Virginia troops. The ledger also contains Martin's business proceedings as deputy clerk for Albemarle County including commonwealth taxes collected, stray livestock registered, and marriages recorded. There is also a daily record of the weather in January 1881. With the account book are a small group of miscellaneous business and legal papers, ca. 1880-1898, pertaining to a Hudson Martin who was a justice of the peace for Nelson County. With these is a letter to the editor regarding public roads in Nelson County.
