This collection contains one hundred ninety two cartes-de-visite photographs of officers who served in the Confederate army. The majority of the officers served as either major generals or brigadier generals in the Confederate forces. The collection includes the photographs of many lesser known officers, as well as the famous; such as Lee, Beauregard, Morgan, Jackson, and Stuart. The collection also includes photos of past American presidents and European royalty. Acid free photocopies have been placed in the original photograph album and the originals are in a separate container. Both copies have the subject's name on it. The cartes-de-visites were taken by photographers in Mobile, Nashville, and New York; and are roughly two by five inches.

Lt. Pirtle, C.S.A. 7th KY Infantry Regt., relates his experiences in the Civil War while stationed in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana from 1861-1864. A resident of Graves Co., KY, Pirtle describes several battles in which he participated as well as several aspects of everyday life in the C.S.A. Army. He also comments on the actions and decisions of several Confederate generals. Collection includes over 400 pg. of photocopies and original handwritten manuscript.

This collection contains materials, 1861, related to Robert Edward Lee's service in western Virginia (now W. Va.) as coordinator of the Confederate Army of the Kanawha and the Army of the Northwest. The bulk of the papers consists of Lee's official correspondence concerning logistics, Union and Confederate troop movements, and the Battle of Cheat Mountain, Va. (now W. Va.). Other items in the collection include handrawn maps of West Virginia; special orders regarding the two Southern armies; and official correspondence of John Buchanan Floyd (1806-1863), commander of the Army of the Kanawha, and William Wing Loring (1818-1886), commander of the Army of the Northwest. Correspondents in the papers include Samuel Read Anderson (1804-1883), Samuel Cooper (1798-1876), and Henry Alexander Wise (1806-1876).

Images of Confederate officers were taken during the Civil War and then mass produced into a card form. These cards, called cartes-de-visites, were collected by individuals and many were kept in albums. These cartes-de-visites were donated from the Robert Steiner III estate and include twenty-three original cartes-de-visites of Confederate commanders.

One Confederate broadside, "To the People of Western Virginia," issued by Maj. Gen. [William Wing] Loring, noting recent victories at Fayette C. H., Cotton Hill, and Charleston, imposing martial law, and calling upon citizens to join the Confederate army. The broadside begins "The Army of the Confederate States has come among you to expel the enemy, to rescue the people from the despotism of the counterfeit State Government imposed on you by Northern bayonets, and to restore the country once more to its natural allegiance to the State" and continues in a similar vein. Charleston, Virginia, 14 Sept. 1862.
