Lambarde, William. Beacons in Kent. Aug[ust] 1585 W[illiam] L[ambarde].
Title:
Beacons in Kent. Aug[ust] 1585 W[illiam] L[ambarde].
Display label text from Lie of the Land: the Secret Life of Maps, British Library, 2001-2002: "Map of Kent by William Lambarde, 1585. This rather crude-looking map of Kent by the historian William Lambarde was the key document for a speedy response to a Spanish invasion. The 50 or so beacons on hill tops and church towers enabled any news of a landing to be passed quickly to London. The lines in red ink indicate the direction of signals given off by the beacons. This map may have served as a model for later printed versions. These were distributed to those responsible for individual beacons so that they would know the direction in which to look for other beacons before lighting their own."
