Field journals, field catalogs, and some manuscripts for unpublished papers pertaining to ornithological specimens acquired by curators and other collectors during expeditions worldwide which were sponsored by the Museum. Collection includes documents by Rollo H. Beck, William Henry Butler, James P. Chapin, Frank M. Chapman, George K. Cherrie, Eugene Eisenmann, E. Thomas Gilliard, George N. Lawrence, Thomas Lindsay Macmillan, Leo E. Miller, Waldron DeWitt Miller, Charles Vaurie, and François Vuilleumier. In addition to a large series of field catalogs and field journals for Chapin's expeditions to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, and the Pacific Islands, the collection includes Chapin's personal diaries with sketches of his observations, date books, a photograph album, news clippings of the Herbert Lang-Chapin Expedition to Zaire (the Belgian Congo), audio tapes, his autobiography, and his annotated copy of his publication THE BIRDS OF THE BELGIAN CONGO. Gilliard's material consists of field notes, unpublished manuscripts, and lecture notes pertaining to his research on the birds of New Guinea. Also, photographs taken by Harry Watkins in Peru of collecting localities, field camps, and general scenes, 1916-1926; photographs are identified. Correspondence of Leo E. Miller, collector, pertaining to his expeditions to South America, 1911-1916; and correspondence of William B. Richardson concerning his collecting trips to. South and Central America, 1892-1927.
