Topics include farming and crops, land sales, mercantile purchases, and slave hirings. Of interest are a series of letters, 1819-1828, from University of Virginia students mentioning negotiations with a D.F. Carr, Thomas Jefferson's reputation and John H. Cocke's intentions to keep students out of Charlottesville by a moat or physical barrier. Other topics include early land transactions in Augusta and neighboring counties, 1744-1810, the estate settlement of Colonel James Patton, and the military service of William Preston against Indians on the Virginia frontier.
