Born Giovanni Francesco Albani in 1649, Clement XI was pontificate from November 23, 1700 until March 19, 1721.
Giovanni Francesco Albani.
Giovanni Francesco Albani was born of a noble Umbrian family and educated at the Roman College, where he became sufficiently proficient in the classics that he was admitted to the exclusive Accademia founded in Rome by Queen Christina of Sweden. After studying philosophy and law, he entered the curial service and advanced rapidly at the papal court. At the age of twenty-eight he governed successively Rieti, Sabina, and Orvieto. In all his assignments he was well received.
Recalled to Rome, he became vicar of St. Peter's and on the death of Giovanni Cardinal Slusio (1687) succeeded to the position of secretary of papal briefs. In 1690 he was named cardinal and exercised great influence under Alexander VIII and Innocent XII; he drafted the latter's constitution Romanum decet pontificem (Jun. 22, 1692) outlawing nepotism. Ordained to the priesthood in September 1700, he was elected pope at the forty-six-day conclave that followed, a candidate supported by the zelanti, that is, the cardinals who wanted a nonpolitical pope with the interests of the church at heart. His qualifications overbalanced the objection that he was only fifty-one years of age.
An ecclesiastic of austere habits, he accepted the papacy with reluctance. In spite of his administrative duties he remained a scholar throughout his life, striving always to enlarge the collections of the Vatican Library, one of the most important additions to the collection being the manuscripts (mostly Syriac) collected at his urging by the Orientalist and librarian Joseph Simeon Assemani (1687-1768). He also endeavored to preserve the cultural treasures of Rome by prohibiting the exportation of ancient objects.
The historian Christopher M. S. Johns (1993) notes: "during the first quarter of the eighteenth century Clement XI redirected papal art patronage away from the glorification of an individual pontiff, which typified the art campaigns of his predecessors, to that of the institution itself . . . [i.e.] the papacy as a spiritual and cultural entity. At the center of his policy was the restoration of several early Christian basilicas, a program deeply informed by the contemporary Paleo-Christian revival in sacred sciences and popular piety. Seeking to represent the image of Rome and the papacy to an increasingly well-educated and secularized Europe, Clement XI thus prepared the way for the creation of a museum-like city that still serves as the spiritual and cultural capital of the classical tradition."
He had less success in the political arena. Owen Chadwick notes that "more calamities happened to the papacy during this pontificate than under any pope since the reformation." Much of his reign was given over to the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), which quickly demonstrated his own and the papacy's ineffectiveness.
During his pontificate Jansenism was condemned by his constitution Vineam Domini Sabaoth (Jul. 16, 1705), and his famous bull Unigenitus Dei Filius (Sept. 8, 1713). His constitution Ex illa die (Mar. 19, 1715) reiterated the 1704 ruling against the use by missionaries of Chinese rites on the pretext that they were primarily civic acts. This prohibition was finally lifted by Pius XII in 1939.

Miscellaneous manuscripts (Large), 1684-1699.
Two documents on parchment in Latin, dated November 26, 1698, and August 28, 1699, and one on paper in Italian, dated December 26, 1684. The 1684 Italian document is a letter written and signed by cardinal Antonio Pignatelli, who later became Pope Innocent XII, probably addressed to Pope Innocent XI, who had created him Cardinal-Priest and archbishop of Naples. In the letter, Pignattelli thanks the Pope for his Christmas wishes and expresses his gratitude for being allowed to serve the Church. He also proclaims his willingness to persevere in his office under the guidance of Innocent XI. The two Latin documents were issued by Pope Innocent XII, but signed by cardinal J.F. Albani, who later became Pope Clement XI. The 1698 document grants a plenary indulgence to all, regardless of gender, who visit the church of Saint Joseph in the jurisdiction of Rome on the feast-day of Saint Joseph, and at that time pray for peace among all Christians. However, it is also stated that the indulgence will only be in effect for seven years, and those who give only a little will receive nothing in return. Contains a later note dated 1699, and remnants of a wax seal. The 1699 document is a papal brief addressed to the bishop of the diocese of Recanati and Loreto in central Italy concerning an individual of that diocese named Octavius Dionysius.

Edward Hawarden letter, 1711 March 14.
In this letter dated March 14, 1711 Hawarden asks an unnamed prelate for protection after he was dismissed from his teaching position at a university. He is most likely referring to the University of Douai. He was dismissed after being charged with heretical views, especially Jansenism. In his letter he defends himself against heresy and professes his loyalty to the Roman Catholic Church. He refers to works by Popes Innocent II, Innocent X, Alexander VII, and Clement XI while defending himself. Hawarden asks the prelate to help him by defending him against the charges of heresy.

The materials are diverse within this series, for example, the first volume of Clement XIII is entitled Per la morte di Clement XIII: Relazione delle feste e regali fatti all'imperadore e gran duca di Toscana biglietti di Monsignore Magiordomo risguardati i regali sua fogli sopra il trattamento del gran duca di Toscana del Conte d'Almada trattamento del gran maestro di Maltae Repubblica di Lucca. There are many incoming letters relating to the death of the particular pope. This correspondence relates to other similar material found in the records of the office of the secretary of state. There is additional conclave material located in a different section of the stacks of the ASV (in 1990 this material was shelved on SF/72). The relationship of this additional material to the Conclavi series is unclear. The additional material is as follows: Clement XIV, 2 vols.; -- Pio VII, 2 vols.; -- Leone XII, 1 vol.; -- Clement XIII, 1 vol.; -- Clemente XII e Benedetto XIV, 1 vol.; -- Relativi di diverse conclavi, 1 vol.

The collection is miscellaneous, but appears carefully ordered according to themes or subjects, which relate to the activities, projects, interests, or political vision of Clement XI. Most of the material dates from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century (ca. 1690-1720). Collected here are various kinds of documents: avvisi, apostolic visits, bandi, memoriali, even entire books bound into the present volumes. Albani 3 is dedicated to Rome and the regulation of public mores. Albani 56 ff. 305-453 is a very nice collection of letters written in a lively diarist's style, demonstrating a special interest on the part of the writer in religious events, cult and ceremonies in Naples (e.g. processions of holy blood, heretics etc.). Folios 465ff make up a small dossier regarding baptism of infidels or catecumeni. The entire volume appears to be a rich source for religious and political events in late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Naples. Albani 224-264 are dedicated to "Indie Orientali e Cina," and are followed by volumes dedicated to Africa and America. Albani 259 is a miscellany concerning China; 264 contains works by the famous Jesuit missionary to China, Matteo Ricci.

Anton Francesco Montauti diplomatic collection, 1689-1744.
Collection of correspondence, legal, notarial, and financial documents, inventories, reports, and other miscellaneous writings concerning the diplomatic relationships between the Grand-duchy of Tuscany, the Papal States, and the Holy Roman Empire for the years 1689-1744. In particular, a large number of documents deal with the relationship between Anton Francesco Montauti, who was stationed as a diplomat in various European locations, and members of the Medici family in Florence. Abbot Marquis Anton Francesco Montauti served as special envoy for Cosimo III, grand-duke of Tuscany, to the Imperial court in Vienna until 1699; from 1699-1708 he served as Secretary of War; most of these letters are written to him in Vienna. Cardinal Francesco Maria de' Medici, brother of Cosimo III, was involved in diplomatic relations between the papal court, Tuscany, and the Imperial Court. Gian Gastone was the son and successor of Cosimo III, some of this correspondence is related to arrangements for his marriage to Princess Anne of Saxe-Lauenburg, widow of the Count Palatine.

Miscello. : M.S. CLXXXII (miscellaneous manuscripts), ca. 1630-1715.
A compendium of Italian ms. poetry and prose writings, many apparently associated with the academies of Ancona (ca. 1630-1685) and with the Accademia Arcadia, Rome (ca. 1691). Bound with it are miscellaneous documents deriving from various Vatican offices (especially the Congregation of the Fabric of St. Peter's and the Camera Apostolica) and mostly dating from 1691-1710. These include: copies of letters to monarchs; studies of the constitution of Vatican offices; homilies of Clement XI; papers relating to the Queen of Poland's visit to Italy (1699); and a lengthy report of Agostino Maria Taia (1699) on the use of the Vatican palace for a "nuova ecclesiastica Radunanza."
