Include accounts, 1778-1802, of Moses Allen (d. 1812) reflecting general purchases of dry goods, groceries, and other household and farm supplies. Also, include receipts for tax payments and legal fees; accounts are endorsed by son John Allen as executor of Moses. Also, include accounts, 1802-1852, of John Allen (1776-1854) for payment of legal fees and taxes, muster fines, purchases of clothing and dry goods, subscriptions, medical services, and a bill, 1834, for recording the deed of emancipation of Jack, an African American slave; materials, 1818-1823, concerning the Craig's Creek Company, Botetourt County, Va., an effort on the part of Jacob Reed, John Allen, John Wilson, Joseph Hannah and Henry Walker as commissioners to contract with someone to clear and enlarge Craig's Creek to make it more navigable for the transportation of goods to market (include lists of subscribers and receipts for payments to individuals for work clearing the creek); and estatee materials, 1854-1876, of John Allen, include refunding bonds of several legatees and materials concerning the investment of Allen's executor, his step-son Martin McFerran, in Confederate bonds, which are rendered worthless at the close of the war (several legatees sued McFerran to recover some portion of the estate). Also, include materials, 1798-1844, concerning the estate of John James Maund (d. 1818) of Botetourt County, Va. Also, include accounts, 1839, 1854-1855, of Martin's wife Penelope (Williamson) McFerran (including an account for tuition and board with the Salem Female Boarding School, Salem, Va.); and miscellaneous accounts of Benjamin Davis (for legal fees, 1824), Daniel B. Leighton (bond to Martin McFerran, 1850), and William Paisley (money owned to Benjamin Davis, 1865).
