Edmund Haynes Taylor's correspondence, 1820-1897, includes a hand-drawn 1847 map of "the Seat of War" during the Mexican War; a typescript of Zachary Taylor's 8 Mar. 1847 letter to E.H. Taylor describing the battle of Buena Vista; letter from John J. Crittenden; a 5 Sept. 1851 letter from Edmund H. McDonald describing his experiences during the Lopez expedition in Cuba, his capture, and his imprisonment in Havana; and two 1851 letters from Sidney Smith to Mary McDonald describing the fate of her son Edmund. Edmund H. Taylor's papers include land papers regarding property in Franklin, Ballard, Hickman, and Fulton counties, Ky.; and legal papers. The papers of E.H. Taylor's son, General Thomas Hart Taylor, include correspondence; receipts; newspaper clippings; and memorials. The collection also includes letters to Hubbard Taylor of Clark County, Ky., from his father James Taylor of Caroline County, Va., discussing agriculture, conditions in Caroline County, politics, family, and health; information on the Taylor family of Caroline County, Va.; material regarding President Zachary Taylor; and correspondence, 1833-1916, received by Philip Fall Taylor discussing family matters, family history, and genealogy. The remainder of the collection includes genealogical and family history materials on the Taylor, Cannon, Bacon, Fall, Woolfolk, and several other collateral families; the first draft of Philip Fall Taylor's "Taylor Book," which traces the history of the family in Ky. and Va.; correspondence, 1914-1949, of Jouett Taylor Cannon; tombstone inscriptions; and miscellaneous papers such as notes, Taylor Family Association programs, invitations, and calling cards.

Title: John B. Shaw letter, 1829 Aug. 3.

Shaw wrote Governor Thomas Metcalfe August 3, 1829, to seek remittance of a $12 fine he was assessed for failing to appear for mustering into the 33rd Regiment of the Kentucky Militia for 1828. Shaw, of Brownsboro, stated he lived in the district of the 116th Regiment and was mustered into that unit. The document also bears signed statements by Colonel Samuel Steele and Lieutenant Colonel R.K. White of the 116th certifying Shaw's claims. A note on the reverse of the document indicates the money was remitted within a few days.

This letter accompanied a commuity petition (no longer extant) to Kentucky governor, Thomas Metcalfe, "for the remission of a fine of seven dollars imposed upon John Patterson. . . under the Rioting act." Vawter thought that Patterson had already been made a sufficient example to society in Boone County. He argued in his letter to the governor that the fine should be pardoned because of Patterson's poverty.

One document is a land grant, given to Thomas Metcalfe for service in the War of 1812, approved and signed by President Millard Fillmore Oct. 1, 1852. Another is a letter from Confederate Colonel J.S. Scott demanding the unconditional surrender of Richmond, Kentucky, by federal forces, Aug. 23, 1862. A certificate appointing Henry C. Metcalfe postmaster of Carlisle, Kentucky, was signed by Grover Cleveland Feb. 21, 1888.

Papers of Adam Beatty and his descendants in the Beatty and Quisenberry families. The papers of Adam Beatty include correspondence, legal papers, and business papers detailing agriculture, politics, slavery, the Episcopal Church, and other aspects of life in Kentucky from the turn of the nineteenth century through Beatty's death in 1858. Correspondents include Robert J. Breckinridge, Leslie Combs, John J. Crittenden, Garrett Davis, Richard Hawes, Richard M. Johnson, Thomas Metcalfe, B. B. Smith, Thomas B. Stevenson, J. R. Underwood, Charles A. Wickliffe, Robert Wickliffe, and numerous other prominent political and religious figures. Letters from family members in California, Louisiana, Maryland, and Texas discuss life in those states. Also included are letters written to Beatty's wife, Sarah, mostly concerning daily life. A small group of Ormond Beatty's papers contain material related to the Civil War, Centre College, the Caldwell Institute, and real estate in Danville, Kentucky. Letters from Ormond Beatty are included in the papers of his parents. Ormond Beatty's daughter, Pattie, grew up in Danville, following the Civil War. Her papers mostly concern social life in postbellum Kentucky, although they also include references to politics and major events. Correspondence to and from Pattie Beatty describes traveling and vacationing in numerous parts of the eastern United States. She was also involved with Presbyterian missionary groups and some related material is included in the collection. In 1882, she married John A. Quisenberry. His papers relate to agriculture, politics, social life, business, and real estate in Kentucky and Texas. Thomas E. Quisenberry, the son of John A. and Pattie Quisenberry, moved to Evanston, Illinois. His papers reflect business, politics, social life, and other aspects of life in Illinois in the mid-twentieth century. Included are copies of his letters to politicians, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, offering Quisenberry's opinions on various issues. The correspondence of his wife Quinlan Hanna Quisenberry (nee Agnes Quinlan Hanna) details social life and travel.

Graham's letter, dated May 21, 1829, was a response to Governor Thomas Metcalfe, who had sent the State of Tennessee a resolution by the Kentucky General Assembly concerning the boundary between the states. Graham, answering for the absent Tennessee governor, said the executive there had no authority from the legislature to act in the matter. He urged the establishment of a joint commission.

This collection contains materials relating to Gov. Thomas Metcalfe and his family. The group consists of two separate accessions to the KHS manuscripts collections. One subgroup contains letters to Thomas Metcalfe from notable figures, genealogical material, and photographs. Included are two 1831 letters from Henry Clay, one a letter of introduction, the other covering politics relating to Masonry and Anti-Masonic parties. Also present is an 1824 letter signed by John C. Calhoun as Secretary of War concerning a pension claim and a letter written by Zachary Taylor during his 1848 campaign for the presidency. There is a long letter written by Metcalfe in 1852 to John C. Breckinridge concerning an address made by an unnamed friend of Breckinridge. An 1849 letter from John J. Crittenden is also present, congratulating Metcalfe on winning election to the U.S. Senate. This subgroup also contains a typed genealogy and coat of arms for the Metcalfe family, and a pamphlet on Metcalfe genealogy published in 1903. A genealogy for the Ball family is present as well. Photographs in the subgroup include undated images of Thomas Metcalfe and his son, Col. Leonidas Metcalfe. A copy of a photograph of Abraham Lincoln is in the group, as well as an image of an unidentified girl. Included are papers concerning John Metcalfe, Thomas Metcalfe's father. Two land grants issued to John Metcalfe from Virginia Governor Edmund Randolph are present. A 1799 inventory of Metcalfe's estate lists his possessions in livestock and household goods. The subgroup includes a few items of political significance relating to Thomas Metcalfe. There is a copy of a resolution taken in the Kentucky General Assembly in 1825 urging the state's Congressional delegation to vote for Andrew Jackson in the upcoming vote in the House. A certificate signed by Gov. John J. Crittenden is also present. This document named Metcalfe as a member of the Board of Visitors for the Western Military Institute. There is also a grant of land in Illinois issued to Metcalfe by President Millard Fillmore for Metcalfe's service in the War of 1812 and an 1851 letter from a friend, Walker Reid, who apparently was a judge seeking reelection. There are also papers relating to the military career of Leonidas Metcalfe. There are some papers concerning the Civil War as well, including a letter of introduction written by Gen. "Bull" Nelson to Secretary of War Salmon P. Chase citing Leonidas' Mexican service. Leonidas received another letter of introduction from Garrett Davis to Secretary of War Simon Cameron, which also gives Davis' assessment of the political situation in Kentucky. A letter from Orlando Moore to Leonidas discussed their misfortunes with the military commanders of Kentucky during the war, J.T. Boyle and Stephen Burbridge. An unusual Civil War item in the collection is a handwritten letter, dated August 23, 1862, by Confederate commander J.S. Scott to an unnamed commander on the Union side, demanding the unconditional surrender of Richmond, Kentucky. The collection also contains many early receipts, as well as a certificate, signed by Grover Cleveland, appointing Henry C. Metcalfe as postmaster for Carlisle, Kentucky.

These are transcripts of acts passed by the General Assembly; signed by representatives of the Senate and House of Representatives; and approved, dated, and signed into law by Governor Thomas Metcalfe. Acts include provisions for the establishment of towns, counties, and election precincts and the incorporation of companies. Of particular interest are numerous acts calling for internal improvements such as establishing canals and ferries; declaring certain streams navigable; and establishing, reviewing, and improving numerous state roads.

This thirty one item collection predominately consists of letters, acts of legislature, and Frankfort Cemetery Committee request for the return of Daniel and Rebecca Boone's remains for reinterrment in the Frankfort Cemetery. These documents were written to Nathan Boone, the son of Daniel and Rebecca. The correspondence is dated 1845. The rest of the collection consists of photostats and typed copies of letters contained in the collection. There is also an essay about the removal and reburial of Daniel and Rebecca. It was written by Mrs. Jouett Taylor Cannon. Some of the prominent Kentuckians who wrote to Nathan Boone are: Robert Letcher, John J. Crittenden, Leslie Combs, Thomas Metcalfe, and William Boone.

This collection contains papers and other materials relating to Governor Thomas Metcalfe and his family. One part of the collection is the Cannon accession. This portion of the papers and other materials were donated by Mrs. Betty Cannon of Albany, Georgia, a member of the Metcalfe family, and generally concerns Thomas Metcalfe. This subgroup contains several letters to Thomas Metcalfe from notable figures, genealogical material, and some photographs. Included are two 1831 letters from Henry Clay, one merely a letter of introduction, the other covering politics relating to the masonry and anti-masonry parties. Also present is an 1824 letter signed by John C. Calhoun as secretary of war concerning a pension claim for a Metcalfe constituent, and a letter written by Zachary Taylor during his 1848 campaign for the presidency. This collection consists of seven letters written to Thomas Metcalfe of Kentucky between 1824 and 1852. Letters were written by John C. Breckinridge, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, Henry Clay, Jr., John J. Crittenden, and Zachary Taylor. Of particular interest are the letters of Breckinridge, Crittenden, and Clay. The Clay letter, dated Sept. 9, 1831, concerns the congressional elections and presidential nominations. He mentions the Republicans and the Anti-Masonic party. Crittenden's letter, dated Jan. 8, 1849, discusses the "sectional meetings," chaired by Metcalfe, of the slaveholding states. Crittenden considers them "dangerous," but has confidence that Metcalfe will not let anything get out of hand. Breckinridge's 1852 letter is a defensive response to earlier correspondence from Metcalfe concerning Mr. Robinson's (John F. Robinson of Indiana) comments about Metcalfe. He thought Breckinridge conspired to defame him and called Breckinridge a "liar and scoundrel," the result of which was Breckinridge's decision to sever communications with Metcalfe.
