Title: Papers, 1794-1919.

Correspondence, documents, and clippings by and about the Gratz family and notebooks compiled by William V. Byars for his edition of the Gratz papers (never published) and other books about the family. Most of the correspondence is among members of the family, especially Rebecca Gratz; Benjamin's first wife, Maria Cecil Gist Gratz, and her mother, Judith Cary Bell Gist Scott; and Joseph Gratz, brother of Rebecca and Benjamin. The land records include deeds signed by Virginia governors Patrick Henry and Edmund Randolph, and a document signed by James Wilson, purchasing shares in the Indiana Company, in which Barnard and Michael Gratz were major investors. Also included are miscellaneous personal papers and clippings of newspaper articles by and about family members, especially Rebecca Gratz. The Byars notebooks contain typescript transcriptions of many Gratz letters and other documents not in this collection, with photographs, maps, newspaper clippings, and other original and secondary material inserted. There are also two volumes of papers concerning the related Campbell and Anderson families of Virginia and Kentucky.

Gist family papers, 1806-1830.

Title: Gist family papers, 1806-1830.

This collection consists of personal and family correspondence to Ann Elizabeth Gist Hart, Anna Maria Boswell Shelby Gratz, and Judith Cary Bell Gist Scott, spanning 1806-1830, with some undated correspondence. The bulk of the collection contains letters and poetry written by the artist Anna Maria von Phul to her friend Ann Elizabeth Gist Hart. Also included are letters addressed from family members written to Hart prior to her marriage to Nathaniel Gray Hart. Among these letters is one from Hart's sister Sarah Howard Gist Bledsoe discussing, in part, a visit to Dolley Madison's "drawing room" while Bledsoe was in Washington, D.C., circa 1814. Other series include letters to additional Gist family members from family and friends. Some items of interest within these series include an 1830 note of pedigree for a race horse that belonged to Anna Maria Boswell Shelby Gratz's first husband Orville Shelby, a letter from F. P. (Francis Preston) Blair to Judith Cary Bell Scott, and one unsigned letter, possibly from Benjamin Gratz, to a person named Ingersoll regarding Wabash land holdings. Other items of note include a letter written in 1822 by Harriette Williman Holley (Brand), daughter of Transylvania University president Horace Holley, to her friend Anna Maria Boswell (Shelby Gratz), discussing her education in Boston, Massachusetts.

This is an undated copy of a document pertaining to the sale of slaves and land in Buckingham County, Virginia by Henry Bell to Judith Gist. The document was originally dated July 1, 1800 and was attested to and signed by John Breckinridge. The copy was apparently made in the nineteenth century.
