Title: Collection, 1923-1992.

Comprises correspondence (primarily incoming) and several works by King from 1939-92. Correspondence content varies from discussions about his works, reviews, publishing, PEN, and politics, to personal information. The bulk of correspondence is from Edith Borne, Ronald Bottrall, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Clifford Kitchin, Robert Liddell, Harold Nicolson, Desmond Stewart, and Godfrey Winn. Also in the correspondence series are letters from King to Alexander Walton (1956-63), discussing King's experiences and impressions of Greece and Japan during his employment with the British Council. Letters from King to his mother date from 1931 to 1992, but the bulk are from 1957-63, and cover a variety of topics. The majority of the novels King wrote between 1949 and 1978 are represented in the collection in typescript or holographic form, most of which have been heavily edited. Some of his novels in this collection are The Custom House (1961), The Last of the Pleasure Gardens (1965), The Waves behind the Boat (1967), A Domestic Animal (1970), and The Needle (1975).

Title: Malcolm Lowry - John Davenport papers, 1926-1970.

The collection consists of material by and about Malcolm Lowry, including correspondence between John Davenport (Lowry's friend and executor) and publishers, colleagues and friends of Lowry; between Malcolm Lowry and Carol Brown, his beau of the 1920s; between Marjorie Bonner Lowry (Mrs. Malcolm Lowry) and John Davenport; and on letter fragment from Davenport to Lowry. The correspondence spans the dates 1926 to 1966. The writings included in the collection consist of autograph, typescript, carbon copy typescript and photocopy typescript drafts of poems, articles, and novels by Lowry. Also included is Davenport's autograph draft biography of Lowry and his typescript preface to the novel ULTRAMARINE. The typescript of UNDER THE VOLCANO has been catalogued separately.

Title: Writers in education questionnaire annotated responses, and photographs, 1979-1996

In 1979 Alan Brownjohn sent a questionnaire to British and Irish poets, novelists, and playwrights requesting their views on writers' fellowships in academic institutions. He retained replies from three who had received fellowships and from twenty who had not. Brownjohn annotated their responses in red ink. Respondents include Dannie Abse, Kingsley Amis, Beryl Bainbridge, Margaret Drabble, D.J. Enright, Michael Frayn, William Golding, W.S. Graham, Michael Hamburger, Seamus Heaney, Thomas Hinde, Ted Hughes, Dan Jacobson, Laurie Lee, Doris Lessing, Michael Longley, Olivia Manning, Stanley Middleton, Iris Murdoch, Piers Paul Read, C.H. Sisson, Stephen Spender, and Ted Walker. Also, includes eight photographs (7 color, 1 b&w) of Alan Brownjohn, 1983-1996.
