Checkbooks for John Colcock & Company and Legare, Colcock and Company contain stubs and blank checks for the Bank of the State of South Carolina. The first volume (34/472, 1852, 1863-1864) may be continued from an earlier one since it begins with the statement "Bal from Ck book No. 1." Check stubs (1852) in the beginning of the volume appear to be for John Colcock & Company. Additional stubs (1863-1864) begin after several blank pages. The time period covered by checks in the second volume (34/473, 1862-1866) overlaps that covered by the first. Legare, Colcock & Company is written on several stubs. Amounts received are for rice, cotton, commissions, on account, and so forth. Checks are written for cotton, drayage for cotton, personal expenses, expenses of the children, tuition, loans, a housekeeper, bricks, sundries, merchandise, and numerous other purposes. A number of checks are written to individuals without indicating the reason for payment. Clients include R.H. Bacot, J.S. Bird & Co., the Charleston and Savannah Railroad, Charles and William Colcock, James Cuthbert, John Douglas, Mrs. E.A. Gillison, Thomas H. Gregorie, Thomas Grimball, Thomas M.
