Dickson family papers, 1818, 1833-1844, and 1859-1860, re farming in Ireland, life in antebellum South Carolina, migration to Alabama and the Old Southwest, slavery and the internal slave trade, 19th-century dentistry and other topics. Three letters, 1818, written to William Dickson (b. ca. 1770) in Spartanburg, S.C. from relatives in County Tyrone, Ireland describing "a fever" which has struck that county, widespread agricultural difficulties, and the family's desire to relocate to South Carolina. Correspondence of Robert Dickson (d. 1837) including letter, 26 Aug. 1835, written from Spartanburg, S.C., by Green Underwood to Dickson in Pleasant Hill (Dallas County, Ala.) discusses slave trade and high demand for African American slaves in the region, instructing him to inform John Smyley "that he need not expect me to get a seamstress for him I have Done all I can & have not succeeded nor do I expect to Do so. Negroes are high here fellows $800 to $900 girls $600 to $700.... I will not Lay out Smyley's money except I can Do it to some advantage. I have but one chance that is Mrs. Wades sale of 40 negros takes place 4 &5 Sept." Letter, 5 June 1836, written from Alabama by Robert Dickson to his father William Dickson in Spartanburg, S.C., following a trip to New York to buy goods to sell in Alabama in which he notes "we have a pretty large stock of goods. Such a stock as ought to command attention any place. Since we commenced... our sales have amounted to about Three Thousand Dollars" and apologizing for not writing sooner but reports a "derangement of the Mails through the Creek Nation," a reference to the Creek War of 1836. Four manuscripts, 1859-1860, documenting the medical and dental career of John H. Dickson (ca. 1834-1864). Consisting of a bill for dental supplies bought for Dickson by James E. Garretson from Horatio G. Kern in Philadelphia, dated 9 April 1859, a letter dated 26 May 1859, from Jones, White, and McCurdy, written from Philadelphia relating the price for "making and mounting Block teeth or mounting single teeth," and two letters written by Garretson in Philadelphia to Dickson at "Dental College, Baltimore, Md.," dated 24 Jan. 1860, and at Spartanburg, S.C., 12 April 1860, informing Dickson of the purchase of dental books and congratulating him on obtaining his dental degree.
