Biographical History

Geoffrey Hoyt Moore, was born February 28, 1914, in Pequannock, New Jersey. He married Ella Goldschmid on July 12, 1938. Following her death in June, 1975, he married Melita Holly on September 28, 1975. He earned his B.S. in 1933 and his M.A. in 1937, from Rutgers University during the 1930s and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1947. In 1939, he joined the National Bureau of Economic Research, becoming Associate Director of Research in 1948 and Director of Research in 1965. In his research role, he made an extraordinarily wide range of important contributions to the indicator approach to business cycle analysis over a span of sixty years, starting in 1939 and continuing through the remainder of the twentieth century. In 1968 he served as President of the American Statistical Association. He served as Commissioner of Labor Statistics from March 1969 to January 1973. While Commissioner, he initiated the development of the Employment Cost Index. Following government service, he returned to the National Bureau of Economic Research. In 1979, he established the Center for International Business Cycle Research and served as its director, He later established the Economic Cycle Research Institute. He died March 9, 2000, in Bloomfield, Connecticut.
