Biographical History

John Elliott was a captain in the United States Marine Corps, and he was assigned to the U.S.S. Pennsylvania from 1943 to 1944. The battleship had been damaged at Pearl Harbor and then repaired. The Pennsylvania participated in the shore bombardment for the Aleution Island landings and many other island landings in the Pacific. The battleship was also one of the line that formed at the battle of Surigao Strait. Diaries were strictly forbidden throughout the military during wartime.

From the description of John Elliott diary, 1943-1944. (University of Wyoming, American Heritage Center). WorldCat record id: 62794341
