Biographical History

Brian Shawcroft, born in England in 1929, is a Modernist architect. Shawcroft studied architecture at the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art in London from 1949 to 1953. In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked in various firms throughout his career. He served as a designer at Slater, Uren and Pike Architects in London and at Page & Steele, Architects in Toronto in the 1950s. Shawcroft served as the consulting architect for design to the firm Holloway-Reeves, Architects in 1961, as a partner with the MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames from 1968 to 1970, the Environmental Planning Associates from 1971 to 1978, and Shawcroft-Taylor from 1978 to 1988. He also worked on commissions independently under Brian Shawcroft, Architect. Many completed projects are located in the Triangle region of North Carolina.

Many completed projects are located in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill).

Shawcroft is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. He is recognized for skills in figure drawing and photography. He funds the Shawcroft Prize at the North Carolina State University College of Design, awarded annually to an architecture student for superior hand drawing skills.
