Biographical History
Barnes Hospital was founded on an endowment established by Robert A. Barnes, a St. Louis wholesale grocer, who died in 1892. The original buildings were constructed between 1912 and 1914. In 1911, a contract was made between the hospital trustees and Washington University School of Medicine affiliating the two institutions, whereby the faculty of the school serves as the medical staff of the hospital. Barnes Hospital ceased to exist in 1996 with a merger of Barnes, Jewish and Children's Hospital.
