Horatio Rodd and his brother, Thomas Rodd the younger, took over their father's bookselling business in 1823. After the business was dissolved, Horatio Rodd became a picture dealer and printseller. His customer, Sir Thomas Phillipps, collected in his lifetime over 60,000 manuscripts of all ages, countries and subjects. He was particularly eager to preserve those printed on vellum.
