Biographical History

Portrait painter.

Born in Brussels, Belgium. Following study at the Academie des Beaux Arts, Brussels, and as a draftsman in Paris, Jonniaux began his career as a portraitist in London. He immigrated to the United States during World War II, becoming a citizen in 1946. During his first ten years in America, he established studios in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. His exhibitions led to many portrait commissions from leading figures in all spheres of American life.

John William Bricker (1893-1986) was born near Mount Sterling, Ohio. He graduated from the Ohio State University in 1916. Bricker served in the Army Chaplain Corps during World War I. After the war, Bricker enrolled in the law school at Ohio State, graduating in 1920. In 1932, Bricker became the attorney general of Ohio, only to leave this position in 1939, after winning election as the state's governor, a position that he had first sought unsuccessfully in 1936. He served three terms, from 1939 to 1945. In 1944, Bricker, a Republican, ran unsuccessfully for the vice presidency of the United States. He did win election to the United States Senate and served two terms, from 1947 to 1959, after which Bricker returned to his law practice in Columbus.

Alfred Jonniaux (1882-1974) was born in Brussels and studied at the Academie des Beaux Arts. He began his career as a portrait painter in London. Jonniaux emigrated to the United States during World War II.
