Biographical History
Vincentian Fathers travelled to many parts of the U.S. to give sermons, teach Church doctrine, and conduct parish renewals.
The congregation is a community of priests and brothers founded by St. Vincent de Paul in Paris in 1625. They and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (founded 1633) constitute the "double family" of St. Vincent under one superior general. The aims of the congregation are the preaching of missions to the poor; training of ecclesiastics; foreign missions; and administering and promoting Catholic education. The community was formally confirmed by Urban VIII in 1632 and came to be known as Lazarists, from the priory of St.-Lazare, which was Vincent's headquarters in Paris. Vincentian vows are simple but private.
John Timon was first provincial superior of the Vincentians in the United States and vicar general of the St. Louis diocese, 1835-1847. He served as prefect apostolic of Texas, 1839-1841. In 1847 he was consecrated Bishop of Buffalo, in which position he remained until his death in 1867.
There have been Vincentian missions in Panama since 1914.
The order of the Vincentian Fathers (Congregation of the Mission) was founded in France by St. Vincent de Paul in 1625; it was founded in the United States in 1816.
The DeAndreis-Rosati Memorial Archives (DRMA) of the Western Province of the Congregation of the Mission was moved from Saint Mary's of the Barrens Seminary in Perryville, Missouri to Chicago, Illinois in 2001. It is the single most significant collection of information relating to Vincentians in the United States. The Western Province retains ownership of this collection, and through its provincial superior determines access and use policies.
Vincentian Fathers based in Eastern Province, U.S.A. operated missions in Kanchow, Kiangsi province, China from 1921-1954.
