Novelist Hugh Walpole was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and educated at Cambridge. After graduation, he supported himself by teaching and began writing novels, gradually building an impressive body of work that earned him significant popularity during his lifetime. A tireless lecturer, he promoted his works with tours and autograph signings that gave him a notable public presence, and contributed to his popularity. A talented writer, his work was marked by traditional themes and values, which some modernist critics found old-fashioned; however, his novels were publicly praised by Henry James, Virginia Woolf, and Joseph Conrad, and were consistently popular. Walpole was an important part of London's literary society between the wars, publishing a novel or collection almost every year.
