Biographical History
Ruth DeLong Avery and Otto Wiederhold jointly operated the Star Stables in Boulder, Colo., from about 1920 to 1940.
Boulder City Directories (cf. 1921, 1923, 1928) list Otto Wiederhold and Mrs. Ruth D. Avery as owners of the Star Stables at 2528 12th St., Boulder, which also was Mr. Wiederhold's residence address. Wiederhold, son of a pioneer Boulder family, was born in Summerville. Avery and Wiederhold operated the Star Stables from ca. 1920-1940.
Ira DeLong participated in the establishment and operation of Boulder's city manager form of municipal government; he was president of a 23-member commission that drafted a city charter and constitution in 1917. A layman in the Methodist Episcopal Church, he also was active in the Boulder Club, the Boulder Country Club and the Boulder Lions Club. In 1914 the University of Denver conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, recognizing his long civic service.
Ruth DeLong Avery Henderson and Edith E. DeLong Smith were daughters of Ira Mitchell DeLong and his first wife Elizabeth A. Wright. Dr. DeLong was linked with the University of Colorado, Boulder, from 1888 when he began as professor and head of the mathematics department until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1925. Active in the community, he helped to organize the Mercantile Bank and Trust Company of Boulder in 1904, as well as the Colorado Chautauqua Association.
Ruth DeLong married William W. Avery in 1910. She and Otto Wiederhold operated the Star Stables in Boulder, Colo., from ca. 1920 to 1940. She married Alvin Henderson in 1952, and died in 1969.
