Biographical History

Maurice Isserman is a professor of history at Hamilton College, New York, and the author of several books on the history of the American left, including: If I Had a Hammer: The Death of the Old Left and the Birth of the New Left (1993) and The Other American: The Life of Michael Harrington (2000).

Maurice Isserman was a friend of singer, songwriter, and activist Bonnie Raitt, whom he met while participating in an American Friends Service Committee summer work camp in Indianapolis in 1967. Raitt entered Radcliffe College in the fall of 1967 and they continued to correspond for a few years.
