Biographical History
The Society of Chemistry Undergraduate Majors (SCUM) is the official name of the ISU Chemistry Club as registered with Iowa State University. The club is open to all students, faculty, and staff interested in using laboratory equipment and performing chemical demonstrations and includes many members not majoring in chemistry. The club had 40 members in 2006.
SCUM regularly performs public chemical demonstrations at local elementary and middle schools. The club also started presenting VEISHEA shows during the 1980s which have since become one of the highlights of the VEISHEA celebration. These shows are often elaborate performances staged in 1002 Gilman Hall and include a storyline, props, numerous cast members, and chemical demonstrations. The club also organizes other social and service events throughout the year.
