Martin Wilhelm Schaeffer of Dresden, Germany, married Frances Spencer Carter (1875-1938) of Raleigh, N.C., in 1899, served in the German army during World War I, visited the U.S. periodically, 1935-1939, lived in Asheville, N.C., with his wife, and was interned in the United States for a time during World War II.

His children were Theodore Wilhelm Schaeffer (born 1907), who served with the United State Army in World War II, and Laura Schaeffer Schnorrenburg (1901-1975).
