Composer and authority on Indian folk song.
Composed 1944.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Composed 1939. First performance Hollywood, California, 7 March 1940, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Albert Coates conductor.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Pennsylvania native Charles Wakefield Cadman was a popular composer and musician. He showed early musical ability, and composed choral works, sonatas, vocal works, and works for diverse instruments; his breakthrough came in researching Native American Indian music. He incorporated Native American musical themes into his music, and went on extensive lecture-recital tours with a Native American singer, Tsianina Redfeather. He moved to California to study music, and went on to write popular songs and opera.
Suggested by certain quotations from Mark Twain's classic American novel. Composed 1945.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
The empress of the title is the Empress Carlotta of Mexico (1840-1927) who went mad after the death of her husband, the Emperor Maximilian. Composed 1943, originally as a sonata for violoncello and piano. Orchestrated 1944. First performance, posthumously, Burbank, California, 4 February 1956, Burbank Symphony Orchestra, Leo Damiani conductor, Kurt Reher violoncello. Corrections made by cellist Douglas Moore, 1986. Dedicated "in gratitude to Gregor Piatigorsky."--Fleisher Collection.
Composed originally for piano 1908. Arranged for strings 1913. First performance Denver Music Festival, Colorado, 17 May 1914, Russian Symphony Orchestra, Modest Altschuler conductor.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
From the opera with libretto by R. La Fleche and N.R. Eberhardt. Composed 1909-12 originally under the title Daoma, or, The Land of the Misty Water. Revised 1939 as Ramala. These two excerpts first performed Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, California, July 1946, Leopold Stokowski conductor.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
