Biographical History
Charles Phelps Smyth was born in Clinton, New York on February 10, 1895. He died in Bozeman, Montana on March 3, 1990. He received his bachelors and masters degrees from Princeton University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University where he studied under the Nobel laureate Theodore W. Richards. From 1920 onwards he was associated with Princeton University. His field of interest was dielectrics and atomic structure. He served in Chemical Service Corps in World War I and was recalled to duty in World War II as a member of Office of Scientific research and Development's ALSOS Mission to secure German scientific secrets. He received the Medal of Freedom in 1947, the ACS Nichols Medal in 1954 and in 1955 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
Born in Clinton, New Jersey on 10 February 1895. Died on 18 March 1990, in Bozeman, Montana. Education: A.B., Chemistry, Princeton University (1916), A.M., Chemistry, Princeton University (1917), Ph.D., Chemistry, Harvard University (1921). Employment: 1917 National Bureau of Standards; 1920-1990 Princeton University.
A graduate of Princeton (Class of 1916), Smyth was a professor of chemistry there, 1920-1963.
