Professor of law at the University of Michigan.
John Wesley reed was born in Independence, Missouri, December 11, 1918, the son of Novus H. and Lilian (Houchens) Reed. He received a bachelor of arts degree from William Jewell College, 1939 and law degrees from Cornell University, LLB, 1942 and Columbia University, LLM, 1949 and JSD, 1957. He was an associate with the firm of Stinson, Mag, Thomson, McEvers & Fizzell, Kansas City, Missouri, 1942-1946 and was associate law professor at the University Oklahoma, 1946-49. Reed joined the University of Michigan law School faculty in 1949, serving as associate professor 1949-1953, professor, 1953-1964, 1968-1985, Thomas M. Cooley professor, 1985-87, Thomas M. Cooley professor emeritus, 1987--. Reed also held the position of dean and professor at the University Colorado, 1964-1968, and was on the faculty of Wayne State University, Detroit, 1987-1992.
Reed was the author of Pleading and Joinder, 1952 (with W.W. Blume); Introduction to Law and Equity, 1953, (with others); Advocacy Course Handbook series, 1963-1981; and was editor in chief Cornell Law Quarterly, 1941-1942;
