Biographical History
Todhunter, Inc. was founded by Arthur Todhunter, who emigrated to the United States from England in 1909. Initially, he concentrated on importing paneled rooms, mantelpieces, fireplace equipment, hardware, and lighting fixtures from England. Soon, he was having reproductions from antiques made specifically for him rather than merely relying on products made by others. He contracted with woodworkers to make mantelpieces and other woodwork. His factory for manufacturing fine metalwork, in operation from 1914-1942, was located in Long Island City, New York, but his shop was in New York City. Todhunter, Inc., which was incorporated in 1926, sold weathervanes, signs, lighting fixtures for indoors and outdoors, decorative metal work such as hinges and door handles, as well as mantelpieces, fire backs, andirons, fenders, fire tools, and other fireplace accessories. During World War II, the business sold only existing stock as it was impossible to get metal to make new goods. The business is believed to have closed around 1955.
