John Quicky Adams Ward was a sculptor born in Urbana, Ohio, on June 29, 1830. From early childhood, Ward displayed a fondness for modeling and making clay figures of animals. After studying medicine at the age of nineteen, Ward went to Brooklyn New York upon the invitation of his sister, a resident of that area. After a few weeks, Ward got an apprenticeship with the famed sculptor Henry Kirk Brown. Under Brown's guidance, Ward mastered the molding of clay, plaster, marble, and bronze.

Ward first attained fame when in 1854 Brown carved "J.Q.A. Ward Asst." on the base of an equestrian statue of Washington, a work which is still considered one of the country's best. From that point on Ward received more commissions than he could handle up until the time of his death in 1910 in New York.

Some of his better known works include: The Indian Hunter, bronze statue in Central Park, New York, 1857-1864; the Garfield Monument, bronze, Washington, D.C., 1887; and, The Pediment on the New York Stock Exchange, marble, New York, 1903.
