Biographical History
William Kahn Leonhart (1919-1997), diplomat and government official, was a graduate of the University of West Virginia and Princeton University. As a Foreign Service Officer, Leonhart worked at the State Department from 1944 to 1965 and from 1969 to 1971. He was Deputy Chief of Mission to Tokyo, Japan from 1959 to 1962, Ambassador to Tanganyika (later Tanzania) from 1962 to 1965, and Ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1969 to 1972. From 1966 to 1968, Leonhart served as Special Assistant to the President to the National Security Council Planning Board, and as Deputy Commandant for International Affairs at the National War College from 1971 to 1975. From 1977 to 1979, he served as Vice President of the National Defense University and adviser to the Department of State. Also in 1979, he was Chairman of the Senior Intelligence Review Panel at the Central Intelligence Agency.
