Agency History: Areas of responsibility of the Planning and Information Management Office include information management, institutional research, administrative computing, planning, space and facilities management, maintenance of Stout and UW System policies, and capital budget development. The origins of the office began with the 1969 appointment of Wesley Sommers as Special Assistant to the President in charge of planning and institutional research. University Planning was thus established with units of Institutional Research and Campus Planning thereunder.
In 1971, Wesley Sommers was named as head of the newly created Administrative Services which merged the functions of the Business Affairs Division and Sommers' existing areas of responsibility in long range planning, institutional research, physical facilities, and the computer center. Thus, University Planning became a part of Administrative Services. The budget planning function was also a part of University Planning until 1976 or 1977 when it was added to the Controller's responsibilities (now Budget and Financial Services). Around 1978, the office was renamed Planning and Institutional Research and was again renamed in 1982 to the present Planning and Information Management Office. In 1984 the Campus Planning Office became the responsibility of the Physical Plant Director. Administrative Data Processing became a part of Planning and Information Management in 1986.
