Biographical History

The governor is responsible for nominating and appointing individuals to positions in the executive branch, to state boards and commissions, to county offices, and to local authorities. The Governor's Personnel Office advises the governor on appointments and oversees the appointment process, including receiving and responding to requests and recommendations for appointments from constituents and legislators. The function was first regularized during the term of Endicott Peabody (l963-l965) under a secretary for state appointments. During the term of Edward King (1979-1983), the function was actually carried out by the Governor's Correspondence Office.
