Biographical History

The Section on Basic Sciences of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1977 through the efforts of Dwight McNair Scott and H. Phelps Potter. It held its first meeting on 22 Mar. 1977. The purpose of the section was to hold lectures and seminars to inform physicians of developments in the basic medical sciences. Physicians who participated in programs were frequently eligible for continuing education credits.

The first chairman of the Section on Basic Sciences was Earle H. Spaulding, who served from 1977 to 1979. In 1979, Dwight McNair Scott became chairman and served until 1980, when Kenneth R. Cundy assumed the position. Cundy was chairman until the section was dissolved in 1985. In 1990, former chairman Earle H. Spaulding, with the approval of former section members, closed the section's bank account and used the remaining funds to endow a journal in memory of George I. Blumstein through the S. Weir Mitchell Associates program.
