Biographical History
The Office of the Superintendent was established by the Council of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on 24 Mar. 1908. A special committee recommended that "there should be a Superintendent of the new building, who should be responsible for its care, the employing and discharging of servants, the renting of rooms, etc." Charles Perry Fisher, Librarian of the College, was appointed as the first Superintendent. The 1914 by-laws state that the Hall Committee was responsible for supervising the Superintendent. According to the 1925 by-laws, the Hall Committee, with the approval of the Council, nominated a Superintendent annually.
When W. B. McDaniel became Librarian of the College, he too served as Superintendent of the College building. In 1937, the position of Assistant Superintendent was created. In 1943, the position of Superintendent was divided from that of the Librarian and the Assistant Superintendent position eliminated; McDaniel remained as the Librarian of the College, and Charles French became Superintendent. By 1972, the Superintendent was under the direct supervision of the Office of the Executive Director. By 1992, the duties of the Superintendent were assumed by the Facilities Foreman under the Director of Special Events.
