Biographical History
The College of Physicians of Philadelphia appointed a Committee on the Revision of the Pharmacopoeia on 5 September 1877. In addition to its chairman, W. S. W. Ruschenberger, the committee included John B. Biddle, Robert Bridges, R. J. Dunglison, and H. C. Wood. On R. J. Dunglison's resignation, I. Minis Hays was appointed. Samuel Lewis was added to the committee in 1878, and J. J. Reese was appointed after the death of John B. Biddle in 1879. The committee was charged with reviewing the U.S. Pharmacopoeia and making recommendations concerning changes to the College. The committee's report was read and adopted on 7 April 1880 and its recommendations given to the College's delegates to the National Committee on Revision.
On 3 October 1888, the College appointed a new Committee on the Revision of the Pharmacopoeia and charged it to report its recommendations to the College before the 1890 meeting of the National Committee. This committee was composed of W. S. W. Ruschenberger, its chairman, Roberts Bartholow, R. J. Dunglison, I. Minis Hays, and H. C. Wood, Jr. At the resignation of R. J. Dunglison in 1889, Hobart A. Hare was added to the committee. The report of this committee was read and adopted by the College on 5 February 1890.
