Biographical History
The Portland Public Market, Portland, Me., was funded by the late philanthropist Elizabeth Noyce's Libra Foundation and was open from ca. 1998-2006. Portland Market House was created by four original vendors of the defunct Portland Public Market. Portland Farmers' Market, located in Monument Square, has operated continuously in several locations since its first opening in 1768.
The Baxter Building is Romanesque Revival, designed by Francis Fassett in 1888. The Maine Historical Society moved into the building in 1892 and left in 1908. For many years it was the location of the Portland Public Library and later the Maine College of Art.
